Located at the existing Harmony Creek Water Pollution Control Plant in Oshawa, this $11,550,000 project involved the construction of a new sewage pumping station with an initial capacity of 171 million litres per day, expandable to 331 million litres per day.
The facility transfers sewage flows through a 6.2 km underground conveyance system to the Courtice Water Pollution Control Plant, which was being constructed concurrently by another contractor. As a result, the project schedule was critical, requiring the pumping station to be fully operational before the downstream facility came online.
The scope of work included:
- A reinforced junction chamber and mixing chamber constructed around existing inlet sewers,
- New 2100 mm and 1500 mm inlet sewers conveying flows to the station,
- Concrete splitting and overflow chambers, including an 1800 mm overflow pipeline,
- Construction of the sewage pumping station and a 1050 mm forcemain to the site boundary,
- An electrical substation with standby power generation,
- Roadways, yard piping, utilities, instrumentation, and control systems.
Despite the complexity and tight schedule, ASCO delivered the project within budget and on time. In conjunction with the Courtice WPCP project, it was awarded the 2008 Public Works Project of the Year by the Ontario Public Works Association.
