ASCO completed the expansion and upgrade of the Georgetown Anaerobic Digestion Facility, increasing its capacity to 22,700 m³/day. This project supports continued residential and industrial growth while improving overall plant performance and reliability.

The work included construction of a new 20-metre diameter reinforced concrete digester, complete with a steel floating gas holder cover and hydraulic mixing system. The system was designed for flexibility, allowing it to operate as either a primary or secondary digester.

A new control building was constructed to house digester mixing and recirculation pumps, a sludge heating system, and high-capacity boilers. Upgrades to existing primary and secondary digestion facilities included replacing gas mixing compressors, gas boosters, and the waste biogas burner.

Plant-wide SCADA upgrades modernized process controls through replacements within five PLC panels, along with updated instrumentation and variable frequency drives (VFDs), improving operational efficiency and reliability.

Working within an active facility required careful coordination. Concrete placement for the new digester met strict tolerances to ensure proper operation of the floating cover, with ballast weights closely controlled to meet manufacturer requirements. Upgrades to gas piping, electrical, and ventilation systems were completed to meet CSA and NFPA standards, with all work phased to maintain continuous plant operations.
