ASCO completed the retrofit of Plate Settlers in Settling Basins 4 and 5 at the Britannia Water Purification Plant for the City of Ottawa.

Delivered under a lump sum contract, the project was executed within a fully operational water treatment facility, requiring detailed planning and close coordination with City operations to maintain continuous drinking water production.

The work was carried out in two identical phases and involved removing existing plate settlers from deep concrete basins and replacing them with new, high-performance systems. Due to the complexity of the environment, ASCO designed and installed temporary working platforms within each basin to safely support heavy demolition equipment, crews, and material handling.

Site access was restricted, making logistics a key challenge. Debris removal and the transport of materials required careful sequencing, along with temporary hoarding, platforms, and access stairs to maintain safe and efficient operations.

The new plate settler systems were delivered fully assembled. However, due to limited entry points, ASCO coordinated the disassembly of the units outside the facility, transported components into the plant, and reassembled them into the basin to meet original specifications.

This project highlights ASCO’s ability to execute complex infrastructure upgrades within active facilities while maintaining safety, operational continuity, and strict project controls.
